How to solve "Failed to update portal and database. Make sure the current windows user has db_owner privileges on database adb"?

With an error like this during updating the NormShield portal through NormShield Hotpoint, it's high likely that NormShield was installed with a different Windows account than it is updated now.

This newly used Windows account may be a part of Local Administrators group, however, it may not be defined as a privileged user in the SQL Server. Therefore, in order to complete the update process, current Windows user should be added into SQL Server having the sysadmin role.

One way of defining current Windows user as sysadmin is explained below;

  • Open up Server Server 2014 Configuration Manager, right click on SQL Server service and choose Properties. Under Startup Parameters tab, add "-m" without quotations and restart the service.
  • Open up SQL Server Management Studio with selecting "Run As Administrator" and add current Windows user having sysdamin role from Security->Server Login.
  • Open up Server Server 2014 Configuration Manager, right click on SQL Server service and choose Properties. Under Startup Parameters tab, remove "-m" without quotations and restart the service.

Now you can continue with the update process from NormShield Hotpoint.
