What are the Best Practices of Managing Assets?

Managing the inventory is one of the most crucial processes of a successful vulnerability management program. NormShield provides grouping capabilities through asset labelling and company management.

However, things can get out of hand easily if there isn't any design principles applied on these groupings. One of the design choices is the choosing between creating a new company or new asset label.

Apart from that decision here are some hints to make a successful asset management;

  • Don't create large amounts of sparse asset blocks at once, this is also a limitation in NormShield since you can only define max of 255 assets (C-block) at once.
  • Use Asset Discovery instead of creating bulk asset blocks.
  • Don't try to use overly long for asset labels for presentation purposes.
  • Try analyze periodically your assets and add/remove labels as it gets necessary.
